United States: Human rights groups say UN Human Rights Council vote allows abusers

Human rights groups and the United States claim that new elections to the UN Human Rights Council will give violent countries a seat at a table where they should be called to go out.

Eighteen countries were selected in a vote at the United States General Assembly on Friday. They include the Philippines, which has been widely condemned by the international community for its deadly crackdown on drugs, and Eritrea, which has been criticized for using military conscription.

Human Rights Watch US director Louis Charbonneau said such votes "scoffed" at the word "election". US Ambassador Nikki Haley said the "lack of standards continues to undermine the council". The United States left in June.

United States missions to Eritrea and the Philippines did not immediately respond to requests for information.

Elsewhere elected Friday go from India to the Bahamas in Denmark.
