WASHINGTON (Reuters) – NHTSA announced Thursday the opening of a preliminary investigation into 54,400 Ford Motor Co.'sF.N) the vans after receiving five complaints that the tailgates were opened unexpectedly while the vehicles were in motion.

The agency said the investigation focused on the F-250 and F-350 Super Duty pickups of the 2017 model year.
NHTSA will investigate whether the problem poses an unreasonable risk to safety and should request a recall.
In October 2017, Ford issued a technical service bulletin on the problem and found that the intrusion of water into the wiring harness was the root cause of the tailgate problems, NHTSA said.
A spokeswoman for Ford said the company was cooperating with NHTSA as part of the investigation.
