Oklahoma is not going anywhere defenseless. The definition of "anywhere" is clear as we head to the sexiest parade in the Red River for years. Texas has both a ranking (No. 19) and a quarterback (Sam Ehlinger). Meanwhile, the much more ambitious goal of the Sooners' seventh round is to win the Big 12 for the 12th time in the past 19 years and to be introduced to Play-off College Football for the third time.
The definition of "defense" at the level of the OR is a little more cloudy. Defensive coordinator Mike Stoops was the ultimate culprit for the crushing loss of the PFC semifinal against Georgia. It remains assertion in this space that, if the Sooners had stood firm against the Dawgs, they would be national champions, not Alabama. The marker machine headed by Baker Mayfield was also good.
This year, this scoring machine is just as powerful, perhaps better. Kyler Murray raises an interesting question: is it better than Mayfield?
Before answering this question, we must determine if this year's defense is worse than that put in place in 2017. So far, the answer is yes, at least statistically. Teams ranked 91st in total defense do not win championships. Last year's unit – the one with a 17-point lead over Georgia – finished 67th.
What must be troubling is that OR has not played anyone yet. Texas will be the first opponent in the season standings. UCLA (120th overall) and Iowa State (123rd) scored the highest total of their season against the Sooners.
There is a kind of dichotomy here. As coordinator D, Stoops coaches two of the top five tacklers in the country. Linebacker Kenneth Murray of Sophomore leads all Power Five defensemen with 12.8 tackles per game. Linebacker Curtis Bolton tied for fifth place overall with 12.4.
There are good players in defense, but the annual scream about Stoops would reach its usual pace if Texas was offended. Two years farther than Bob Stoops' shadow, coach Lincoln Riley now has coverage if he wants to change course on his brother Mike.
And now, the rest of our stories from week 6.
1. Meanwhile, at the Texas State Fair … There are enough sights and smells in this rivalry (which precedes the state of Oklahoma, from elsewhere) to fill the gold hat. Fried ice cream, Krispy Kreme burger, French fries and Elvis sculpture – in butter. On the field, Texas is on the road to victory (outsiders 7.5 points). Get the air out of the ball. Catch him with four or five seconds left on the stopwatch. Limit possessions. Go all Bill Snyder on OR. It would keep Murray off the field and expose the defense you mentioned above. In consecutive games, Army and Baylor have combined to run twice as many games as OU. Knights and Bears held the ball 68% of the time.
Efficiency is the key. The possession time is 120th, but the average is 1.87 points per possession. Texas holds the ball longer, but averages only 0.86 points per possession. You better believe that Tom Herman noticed this trend. And you'd better believe that horns have a chance. In the meantime, we can not wait to have a corndog with the human torso.
2. Nick Nitpicking: Napalming college football with the best team, the best program and (perhaps) the best player does not seem to be enough for Nick Saban. In his last speech – before the trip to Arkansas – the Bama coach this week pitted students against student-athletes. There are not enough students, he says, who show up to watch their classmates. Flash info: There is a problem that interests students not only in Alabama, but everywhere.
Nick must be complaining about something, it seems. Students in Alabama pay about $ 11,000 a year in tuition fees to graduate. Nick's guys get a free education to play football. Considering that the well-researched academic advances of the University of Alabama have matched the excellence of football, both parties seem to have fulfilled their obligations.
3. Thanks, Joe Alleva: When LSU refused to travel east during Hurricane Matthew two years ago, Alleva, the Tigers' DA, knew that day was coming. Due to the postponement of this storm, for the first time in its history, LSU travels to Florida in consecutive season. Now, you know who to blame if the Gators upset the No. 5 Tigers. (LSU triumphed last year with a 17-16 face-to-face decision.) Florida won 16-10 after a hurricane with a line of goal in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.) The Tigers quarterback, Joe Burrow, wins the best match by an LSU caller in 17 years (in terms of total yards – 388 vs. Ole Miss).
4. Protocol by Trevor Lawrence: Clemson's quarterback would have taken all the photos earlier this week. This followed a head / neck injury that took him out of the Syracuse match. The informed fan understood that the Orange was exposing what Clemson will look like.
Lawrence has a rocket arm, but his opponents can ignore the plus-one factor (a quarterback running). Without the threat of Kelly Bryant's legs, this essentially means 11 defensemen out of 10 offensive players. Lawrence was injured while running. That will probably mean nothing to Wake Forest this week. But that could go against Georgia and Alabama. Stay tuned.
5. Irish hype taking off: Notre Dame has his quarterback (Ian Book: six touchdowns, no interception in two starts). His defense is even better (the four bags of the line player Jerry Tillery against Stanford were the most marked by an Irish player in 13 years). The way to the university football match is also becoming clearer.
No. 24 Virginia Tech could be the last team ranked ND plays. Even better (for the Irish), quarterback Ryan Willis was replaced by the Hokies. A regular season 12-0 seems to be a distinct possibility.
6. Backpack or chain: Each game in the Florida State-Miami series seems to have its own name: Wide Right, Wide Left, The Hard Rock Block, The Rally in Tally. The Canes would just like to protect his territory against the state of Florida. It's not flashy, but it's okay. Miami has not won at home in this rivalry since 2004. "This is an important historical item that we need to change course," said Canes coach Mark Richt.
The turnover chain had a training session last week against North Carolina (six takeaway). The Florida State version is an imitation, the Turnover Backpack. Miami (12) and FSU (8) accounted for 18% of VAC teams' take-away sales.
7. Auburn defects: The No. 8 Tigers could be the most shaki team in the top 10 at the moment. They can not run the ball. For the first time last week, a team led by Gus Malzahn was held less than 100 rushing yards in consecutive games (by Southern Miss, no less!). His defense carries the charge to the state of Mississippi. Only one other SEC team (Ole Miss) has more penalties on average.
8. Bloated salary: Two coaches with combined salaries of $ 7.2 million will train the teams they have led to a combined record of 14 to 43 years. Call football not to be missed: Illinois (Lovie Smith, $ 5 million a year, 7-21 total) at Rutgers (Chris Ash, $ 2.2 million, 7-22).
9. The most unfamiliar unbeaten team: Cincinnati (5-0, Tulane) has not been 6-0 since a certain Brian Kelly coached the Bearcats in 2009. Cincy is the FBS leader in defense of efficiency passes and ranks among the top 20 with an offensive line consisting of:
- Left guard Dino Boyd, a graduate transferred from Rhode Island
- Left guard Kyle Trout, another graduate mutate who was a starter for the Ohio State in 2017
- Center Garrett Campbell, a 6 year old
- Morgan James, a former hockey player who has never played football before walking three years ago
- Straight striker Chris Ferguson, who grew up in the Bahamas and never played college football until the match opened at UCLA
Quick kick: There are Oklahoma seniors who have won as many Big 12 titles as Texas in its history (three) … Indiana (at Ohio State) has not beaten the top 10 since 1987 (37 consecutive losses) … Is Texas back? Best question: Why is Maryland (3-1 headed to Michigan) not ranked as the only team to beat the Horns? … Scott Frost participated in the longest winning streak in the country (17 of his former team, UCF) and in the second longest streak of defeats (eight from Nebraska) … The 216 points posted by Boston College (at NC State) ) are the best performers. five games … Hawaii, who is 5-1 for the first time since starting 6-0 in 2007, has not shot 30,000 for a home game since 2014. Aloha Stadium, match site this week against Wyoming, can accommodate 50,000 people. The Warriors are the only 2-0 team in Mountain West …… If North Carolina (goodbye) bows out on Larry Fedora, wait until Blake Anderson of Arkansas State receives all the attention that He deserves. Anderson was the offensive coordinator of the UNC from 2012 to 2013
