University football ranking: Texas enters the top 10, Auburn falls in CBS Sports 129

[ad_1]

We spent six weeks in the university football season and several prestigious teams came closer to the front of the pack after emphatic victories. Notre Dame climbed to fifth place in the CBS Sports 129 after a dominant Virginia Tech victory of 45-23, which kept College Football Playoff's dreams intact for the Fighting Irish. Texas probably needs some help to engage in this conversation, but the 48-45 loss to rival Oklahoma earned the Longhorns the No. 8 standings, boasting the right to boast and shaking what seemed to be a crazy Big 12 championship race.

LSU fell from top 5 to 14th after being beaten 27-19 in Florida in The Swamp; the Gators went to number 13, a place in front of the Tigers. Then there are the Sooners, who dropped to 12th after the Red River Showdown defeat.

CBS Sports and 247Sports University Football Experts issue weekly ballots, averaging our rankings. You can see the top 25 below and 26-129 on our ranking page.

The biggest movers

  • Auburn (-15): The Tigers were unveiled Saturday night in Starkville, Mississippi when the offensive woes that hit the Tigers all year round came together in a putrid rally that seriously undermined their league hopes for the SEC West. Quarterback Jarrett Stidham was under fire all night behind and the offensive line was a sieve. The run did not last all night and the defense saw quarterback Nick Fitzgerald.
  • Texas (+11): We do not know if the Longhorns are back, but they are back in the Big 12 race after a thrilling victory over Oklahoma. Quarterback Sam Ehlinger was a red zone force on the field, he found his pace in the air and the defense – despite the case that scored a lot of points – dominated the Sooners.
  • Florida (+7): Dan Mullen earned his first signing as a Gator leader with a 27-19 win over LSU. The defense was fierce, Feleipe Franks actually pretty under center and they appeared as a legitimate threat to the Georgian crown in the Eastern SEC with just under two months of the coming season.
  • California (-30): The Bears lost their second straight game on Saturday night against a disappointing Arizona team under first-year coach Kevin Sumlin. Quarterback Brandon McIlwain was not the key to Justin Wilcox's recovery, and the offense does not seem to keep up with the fast pace of the Pac-12 defenses.
  • Cincinnati (+10): The Bearcats have quietly gone under the radar, but are among the 11 undefeated teams at FBS. After a victory over Tulane, they have the best defense of the AAC, have an average of 6.38 yards per game and are the surprise team in the race for a New Year's bowl.
