University football results: Clemson enters the top four, will Alabama join them?

At this point, it seems clear that Alabama and Clemson will be participating in the university football playoffs this year. This feeling was only confirmed when the first Rankings of university footballers are out Tuesday night with the two teams occupying the first two places. Before this week, however, neither team had a strong enough CV in our rankings to be in the top four. These rankings are meant to measure the strength that everyone has beaten and do not take into account how they played.

However, unlike Alabama, Clemson is in the top four this week, although it's not just due to Clemson's achievements. The Tigers demolished Florida State Saturday, but that win was worth only one point because the Seminoles are not the team that was expected.

What pushed the Tigers to pass from # 6 last week to # 3 this week is the defeat of Texas # 3 at Oklahoma State and the last few weeks of Michigan and the state of Ohio. The problem Clemson faces with these rankings is that Boston College is the only team currently on its schedule, and there is no guarantee that the team that Clemson faces in the ACC championship will be ranked either.

Fortunately for the Tigers, if they win all these games by almost 50 points per game, as they have done in the past three weeks, it will not be much of importance.

Remarks

• If you mention how good Alabama is on Twitter, someone who is not a fan of Alabama will tell you that he did not play against nobody. As these rankings reflect, the statement is true, but to a certain extent. The tide only had one victory over a ranked team, and that was against a Texas A & M team that is now 5-3. Apart from that, Alabama's best win is Ole Miss or Mizzou. I let you decide what was the most impressive among you. Nevertheless, as far as Alabama is concerned, it is not a question of who he has beaten, but of how much he has dominated all his opponents. And with Saturday's game against LSU and a date with Mississippi State next week, Alabama will have a chance to improve on its score here. For example, Alabama is currently favored by the 14-point favorite over LSU. So, if he beats LSU by 14 points on Saturday, he will win 8.4 checkpoints, which would bring his season total to 20.6, which would probably put him in the top four.
• Michigan may still be behind Ohio State and Georgia, but the Buckeyes are playing Nebraska this week and can only win one point. Michigan play Penn State, and a win against the Nittany Lions would be at least 5.1 points, which could allow the Wolverines to overtake the Ohio State and be in the top four. Conversely, if Penn State beat Michigan, it would earn at least 7.1 points. Penn State is currently ranked 23rd in the standings with 4.5 points, and an additional point of 7.1 would likely put it in the top 10 next week.
• This week's game between Georgia and Kentucky will have a significant impact on the Eastern SEC as well as on these rankings. A Georgia win would equate to at least 5.1 points, while a Kentucky win was worth at least 6.1 points.
• Texas has two losses, so their hopes in the playoffs are probably good. Nevertheless, if there is a team that currently has a chance to reach the playoffs with two defeats, these are the Longhorns. They are still ranked # 7 here and they are playing West Virginia this week. They could also still play Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship Game if they win. It's a long wait, but all hope is not lost for the moment. Longhorns, however, would need a lot of help.
• You will notice that there is no team of five in the top 10. So if the last three years are an indication of the accuracy of this ranking, this is not good news for UCF. And in case it's not enough for the Knights' chances, UCF is not even the highest ranked Group of Five team in the CV standings. Knights are currently at # 15 with 6.0 points. Houston is at No. 12 with 8.1 points.
