ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) – Shea Patterson made three touchdown passes to Donovan Peoples-Jones, helping Michigan to retire to beat SMU.
The Wolverines (2-1) did not score until Ben Mason converted a fourth time with a 1-yard touchdown in the middle of the second quarter.
The Mustangs (0-3) responded with a 50-yard pass from Ben Hicks to James Near to equalize.
Michigan took control of the last 2:34 of the first half. Patterson pitched a tiebreaker, a 35-yard TD pass to Peoples-Jones, and Josh Metellus returned a 73-yard interception for a score at the end of the allotted time. Patterson threw 7- and 41-yard passes against British Columbia at Peoples-Jones in the third.

Michigan was eager to buy back after losing to Notre Dame in the first game of the season.
Prior to last Saturday's opener against Western Michigan, the Wolverines were criticized by fans, media and even former receiver, Braylon Edwards, who have embarked on social networks.
A 49-3 Western Michigan defeat at the Big House has soothed the criticism of coach Jim Harbaugh, at least for now.
No. 19 Michigan (1-1), who climbed two places last week in the Associated Press poll, will look for another unbalanced victory when he hosts the Southern Methodist (0-2) on Saturday afternoon in Ann Arbor.
"The run has been better," Harbaugh said Monday comparing the two games. "There were exceptional things."
Choices and forecasts for week 3
The dominant effort against Michigan West (0-2) also had a better mood in the players. The Michigan offense was followed by 308 yards and three touchdowns, while transfer quarterback Shea Patterson had 125 yards passing and three touchdowns, and the Wolverines defense nearly blanked.
