Derek Mason and his Vanderbilt Commodores think they have learned to better manage a good start to the season and the challenge of facing a tough opponent.

A year ago, Vanderbilt started with a 3-0 start that included a Top 25 team at Kansas State. Then the Commodores welcomed Alabama.

The Crimson Tide sent Vanderbilt 59-0, sending the Commodores on a skid of five games, which cost them a second place in a row.

Choices and forecasts for week 3

Now, the Commodores (2-0) win big winnings to open the season and their first game on the road will be Saturday at 8th Notre Dame. Mason is convinced that they are in a better position now.

"We will take the best team I think I had in my term, go to Notre Dame and try to win," Mason said on Tuesday. "We are confident enough to work hard in practice, but respectful enough to understand who they are and what they have done to know that it is not an easy task."

Part of that confidence comes from the painful lessons learned a year ago about the need to focus on the task at hand. Do not be too high or too low. Mason said that the key is to stay composed and not to let the place, the adversary or the atmosphere release its Commodores from their game.

Mason considers that his Commodores are eager to play well, knowing that Notre Dame (2-0) is good enough to expose their weaknesses.

"In the end, can we overcome this adversity to play well?" Mason said. "The big teams have been able to expose what we are not doing well, and what we need to do is make sure we minimize and maximize our opportunities." C & # 39; we planned to do Saturday to see this team play ".

Vanderbilt wins wins over Middle Tennessee and Nevada. The Commodores gave an average of 8.5 points to each of these games.

Notre Dame won the only two games between these programs in the mid-1990s. Mason was the coach of his defensive coordinator, Jason Tarver, at Notre Dame, so he plans to take the Commodores to South Bend, Indiana , Friday. Mason wants his Commodores to enjoy the story of Fighting Irish, and then focus on the game itself.

"We play a team that looks a lot like us, with probably a better history and a better pedigree all around," said Mason.
