Week 3 of the college football season is in the books. Of course, several sets of marquees across the landscape have had major impacts.
Although the Ohio State went down to Texas and took a victory over TCU, the rest of the Big Ten did not perform as well. After Saturday, how many legitimate contenders are Buckeyes?
And at the SEC, LSU won a decisive win early in the season at Auburn thanks to a goal on the field. With these games and so much more, it's time to take a step back and digest everything that happened in the first three days of week 1.
winners
State of Ohio: Anyone with a brain knew that the Ohio State was going to get the best shot of TCU. The Horned Frogs coach, Gary Patterson, is one of the best in the game for a reason. It's a brilliant defensive mind and bold enough to take calculated chances. For about two-quarters and a half, Ohio State was in a real battle before three quick points in four minutes changed the tone in a win of 40-28. TCU is a quality team that can compete for a Big 12 Championship. Consider this successful test for the Buckeyes. the injury at the end of the defense, Nick Bosa is concerned, though.
LSU quarterback Joe Burrow: It's a bit wrong to call the transfer from the Ohio State "missing piece" for the LSU offensive, but when was the last time the Bayou Bengals had at least a quarter to one-half reliable? Burrow is not a game change for the Tigers, but he has done enough to keep the sticks moving in the LSUs 22-21 thriller on Auburn. He makes great games when they have to be done. On the winning record of the LSU game alone, he had conversions in third and seventh and fourth and seventh. Keep in mind that it was in his first departure on SEC road. This is not an anomaly. He was also solid in the third pass against Miami in the first week. For three weeks, LSU won the country's two best wins. They may not have one, and they were angry at one-quarter.
BYU: There was something odd about BYU, an outsider with 23.5 points against Wisconsin # 6. The line was a bit big. Yes, it's easy to say with hindsight The victory of Cougars 24-21 in Madisonbut discreet they were a good team in the first three weeks. They defeated Arizona during the first week and found themselves facing Cal, who should be a player team. Is this an unexpected surprise? Of course, but BYU was a little better than expected. Last year's 4-9 production was probably an anomaly.
Kansas: Rutgers is b-a-d, bad. Yet Kansas does not win every day, let alone a 55-14 game. So, let the Jayhawks celebrate these little moments of satisfaction related to the fight against the opponent. The last time Kansas won two straight games, it was in 2011. The last time he's won two straight games against FBS opponents, it was in 2009, when Mark Mangino was coach. Rock Chalk, etc., etc.

The Big Ten: A good policy is to never make generalized generalizations of the conference that will only need to be reinstated later. That being said, the Big Ten had a tough day in the third week. Apart from the Ohio State's victory over the TCU, the Big Ten did not have much to do apart from a few scores. Wisconsin was upset at home by BYU. The same was true of Nebraska against Troy, 24-19. Rutgers was hosted by Kansas and Maryland Temple 35-14. Northwestern lost 18 points over Akron 39-34 at home and Illinois conceded 18 fourth-quarter points to South Florida in a 25-19 loss. Finally, Purdue is still trapped 40-37 by the Missouri horn. Not great.
Saving coaching: Coaching tends to be overvalued in college football. It's important, do not get me wrong, but talent does a lot. This does not guarantee anything, but it is more difficult to win without it. Coaches such as Scott Frost (Nebraska), Willie Taggart (Florida State) and Chad Morris (Arkansas) are discover it quickly. Together they are 2-6 to three weeks old. And Arizona, led by Kevin Sumlin, is without a win for his match against South Utah. With time, they can turn things around. Some tasks are obviously more important than others. For the moment, they are a lesson that coaches can actually have trouble. Even Nick Saban went 7-6 and lost to Louisiana-Monroe in his first season.
USC: Trojans have work after Texas removed 37-14. Clay Helton is 1-2 on the season and USC have had their first consecutive double-digit losing streak since 2000. Nor is it a big Longhorns team, and yet the USC was not able to tell the difference. (-5 yards on 16 attempts) or do something on special teams. And the USC is also in Washington State for a short week. A title of Pac-12 South seems much less safe than during the pre-season.
Utah: Nothing to do with a 21-7 defeat against Washington was enough favorable, but the Utes have set up a clinic on how to shoot frequently in the foot and with disastrous consequences. Utah lost three turnovers and could easily score two or three touchdowns on the board, which was unsuccessful. From escaped to missing receivers in the red zone, Utah found every possible means to stay out of the dashboard. Missed opportunities have become a recurring theme under coach Kyle Whittingham, but no matter, the Utes can not recover that one.
The fourth of the state of Florida Deondre Francois: Seminoles hit the bottom when they lost 30-7 to Syracuse. There are many words to write about it, but what sums up better than any other general anxiety, is the disgust that Francis seems to have for his offensive line. He's so mad at them that he do not even want their help detach from the grass. He continues to take more hits than any other quarter – so many punches that he should qualify for workers' compensation. Look at it and say you would not be angry too:
The best of the rest
Texas Tech QB Alan Bowman: The real first-year quarterback scored 43 of 59 on 605 yards and five touchdowns in the Red Raiders 63-49 win over Houston. This is a Big 12 pass record in single play and yet, in a way, remains a pedestrian day for Texas Tech.
Penn State, in charge of Miles Sanders: Saquon Barkley left for the NFL and it's a sad reality for college football. However, it seems that Penn State has another GIF machine in Sanders. This button B movement against Kent State is extremely Sáquonian. Sanders had 86 yards in the 63-10 win.
Vanderbilt, encapsulated: The catch-turn-strip-turn-fumble-turn-touch-touchback of Vanderbilt for Notre Dame has seen more ups and downs than a roller coaster. And, in a way, no game was more appropriate Vanderbilt. The Commodores gave Notre Dame everything she could handle, but she was short 22-17.
Ole Miss: The rebels scored in the first scrimmage game against Alabama, a 75-yard strike from Jordan Ta'amu against D.K. Metcalf. It's no secret that Ole Miss has a fun attack and some of the best receivers in the game, but that was a good start had there been one. The problem? Ole Miss has never scored again in a 62-7 loss.
State of Oregon: The Beavers lost 30-7 to Nevada, came back two points (37-35) and missed a 34-yard field goal. It's hard. Thoughts and prayers. At least beavers have a cool case figure?
Woo Pick Sooie: How much was the 44-17 loss in North Texas due to Arkansas? Three different quarters launched six interceptions, including a choice of six launched by John Stephen Jones. It would be the grandson of Josh Jones, Hogs alum. Ouch.
Memphis runner Darell Henderson: The quick return had 233 and two touchdowns in Memphis' 59-22 defeat against Georgia State on Friday night … on just 14 runs. It was his second consecutive 200-yard game and he has nine games of at least 100 yards dating from last season.
Purdue: Boilermakers could be the best 0-3 team in the country (Yes really). They are also the best team to catch each other's helmet passes. Discover this deviated capture in the loss of Purdue in Missouri. It's just putting the team in front of the individual.
The Middle Tennessee trick has failed: Word to wisdom: you will not run straight ahead and out of Georgia. However, another word to the wise: you will not go cute and thwart Georgia either. Middle Tennessee found it difficult in a 49-7 loss to the Bulldogs.
Your "what the hell?" score of the day: State of South Dakota 90, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 6. Seriously.
