Union officials said 41 Marriott hotel employees were arrested tonight in San Francisco when they demanded changes at their employer, such as higher wages to be able to hold a single job.

Around 5:30 pm Unite Here Local 2 employees, representing at least some of the workers, were sitting on Fourth Street, outside the Marriott Marquis Hotel, to draw attention to their demands.

Nearly 3,000 Bay Area Marriott employees went on strike last week demanding higher wages, increased worker safety and job security.

Some workers went on Twitter today, "My job @Marriott is not enough to pay the rent," said Candida Kevorkian, housekeeper at Westin St. Francis. "I share my apartment with three generations of my family.I was arrested for the same reason that I went on strike.A # 1 job should suffice for hotel workers like me."

The San Francisco police did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation of the number of arrests.

More than 1,000 hoteliers took to the streets of San Francisco this afternoon before civil disobedience.

Union officials said Local 2 President Anand Singh and Local 2850 President Wei-Ling Huber were among those arrested.

They and 39 others were arrested while they refused to move to let the traffic pass.

In a statement, Singh said: "Months of negotiations with Marriott have led us to a decent income, a safe workload or job security, and we are not moving back."

Singh said the workers will go on strike until they need only one job while working for the world's richest hotel company. "

Hotel workers are on strike in seven San Francisco Marriott hotels, some of which do not have a Marriott name.

Marriott officials were not immediately available to comment.
