WASHINGTON – The United States said it had placed a network of Russian and Iranian companies on an international blacklist for shipping oil to Syria, in violation of the sanctions imposed by the United States.
Officials said the network helped fuel President Bashar al-Assad's war effort in Syria, while generating revenue for Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and militant Hamas groups. and Hezbollah.
The listing blocks all US assets and prohibits US entities or US citizens from dealing with companies.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin (mih-NOO'-shin) on Tuesday announced the names that the nine companies and people added to the list were "key players" in a project to support Assad.
Among those added to the list are a Syrian national and his Russian-based company and a subsidiary of the Russian Ministry of Energy.
