US General Jeffrey Smiley injured Thursday in attack in Afghanistan

"I can confirm that he is recovering from a gunshot wound that he received during the Kandahar attack," the Cdr announced. Grant Neeley, a spokesman for NATO's Resolute Support Mission, told CNN Sunday.

Smiley, the Train Commander, Counselor, Assist and Commander – South, is based in Kandahar. He is treated for the injury and is still in charge of the command.

Previously, the NATO-led coalition had identified the two Americans wounded in the attack as a member of the military service and a civilian employee of the government.

Two Afghan officials, including the police chief of Kandahar province, were killed in Thursday's incident.

General Scott Miller, chief of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, unsheathed his handgun during the attack, according to a coalition member familiar with what happened . Miller did not shoot.

The Washington Post was the first to report that Smiley had been hurt.
CNN had previously reported that the Taliban had issued a statement claiming responsibility, saying the group had killed "the famous police chief", who was their main target of the attack. The gunman was killed by the US military, a senior official said Thursday.
The violence erupted when voters went to the polls this weekend to vote in Afghanistan's parliamentary elections.
