US intercepts "suspicious packages" to Clinton and Obama: NPR

The intelligence services announced Wednesday that they intercepted two suspicious parcels addressed to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Westchester County, New York, and former President Barack Obama in Washington, DC DC.

Monday, an explosive device was found at the billionaire George Soros, which frequently contributes to democratic and progressive causes.

The packages addressed to Clinton and Obama "were immediately identified as potential explosive devices during the usual mail filtering procedures and were handled appropriately as such," the Secret Service said in a statement Wednesday. "The beneficiaries did not receive the parcels and were not likely to receive them."

The package sent to Clinton was intercepted Tuesday night and the package for Obama was intercepted early Wednesday morning.

CNN also reported that its New York City office was evacuated on Wednesday morning due to a suspicious package received in its mailroom. In a note to staff, CNN President Jeff Zucker said the Time Warner Center had been cleaned up "as a precaution."

The New York Police Department confirmed that his agents were investigating a suspicious package at Columbus Circle, where the office is located. It is not clear if the CNN incident is related to other suspicious packages.

Regarding the Clinton and Obama packages, the secret services announced that they were investigating the incidents, using "all available federal, regional and local resources to determine the source of the packets and identify those responsible".

The FBI office in New York says in a tweet that he is "aware of a suspicious package discovered in the vicinity of the Clinton residence in Chappaqua, in the state of New York".

Local law enforcement officials told NPR that "this morning the New Castle Police Department helped the FBI, the secret services and the Westchester County Police investigate a suspicious package", and added that "the case is currently the subject of an investigation by the federal government".

Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, bought a house in Chappaqua, New York, in 1999; two years ago, they bought a second house, the one next door.

Like the Clintons, Soros lives in Westchester County, New York. He made a cash donation to the Open Society Foundation, which financially supports NPR.
