In a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Senators Mark Warner and Marco Rubio make it clear that Canada should leave China's Huawei Information and Communications Technology giant on his plans to build a new generation mobile network.
"While Canada has strong security measures for telecommunications security, we are seriously concerned that such measures are inadequate given what the United States and other allies know about Huawei, "says the letter. Senators cautioned Canada to "reconsider the inclusion of Huawei in all aspects of the development, introduction and maintenance of 5G in Canada".
The outcry came after the head of the Canadian Cyber Security Center dismissed Huawei's security concerns last month. The Canadian Center for Cybersecurity is Canada's designated federal agency responsible for cybersecurity.
Next-generation 5G networks already pose a number of unique security issues. Lawmakers warn that by allowing Chinese government-related enterprises to build a 5G infrastructure, the United States and its close allies (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom) would invite the fox to keep the henhouse.
Under the US Defense Approval Act, passed in August, the US government approved a law banning national agencies from using services or equipment designed by Huawei and ZTE. A week later, Australia decided to block Huawei and ZTE from its own 5G system.
Due to the open nature of intelligence sharing between the United States and its closest allies, the Canadian government would be able to obtain information on any specific threat justifying US posture for Chinese society. "We urge your government to seek additional information from the US intelligence community," the letter implores.
