US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday urged Pakistan to take action against those responsible for the Mumbai attacks in 2008, while Washington offered a new $ 5 million reward for helping to secure their capture.

The announcement was made on the eve of the tenth anniversary of the assault, which left 166 dead and hundreds wounded after Pakistani Islamist militants unleashed a wave of violence that lasted three days in the financial capital of India.

"It is an affront to the families of the victims that after ten years, those who planned the Mumbai attack have still not been convicted for their involvement," Pompeo said in a statement.

"We call on all countries, especially Pakistan, to respect their obligations to the UN Security Council to apply sanctions to terrorists responsible for this atrocity, including Lashkar-e-Tayyiba and its affiliates."

"We are with the families and friends of the victims, including six US citizens, including six US citizens," he added.

The Department of Justice's Rewards for Justice (RFJ) program announced that it was offering up to $ 5 million "information leading to arrest or conviction in any country of any person who allegedly committed, conspired to commit, aided or abetted "the execution of the attack.

This is the third award of this kind offered by the United States after the State Department announced $ 10 million in bonuses for Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) founder Hafiz Mohammad Saeed and $ 2 million for Hafiz Abdul Rahman Makki, another leader of the group.

Saeed, also known as a terrorist by the United Nations, denied any involvement in terrorism and bombings in Mumbai.

A party linked to the LeT's charity wing challenged Pakistan's national elections in July, winning no seats but winning more than 435,000 national and regional votes.
