US signals potential "terrorist threat" to Congo

JOHANNESBURG – The US embassy in the Congo said it received "credible and accurate information about a possible terrorist threat against US government facilities in Kinshasa."

A security alert for citizens does not give more details but indicates that the embassy will be closed to the public on Monday.

Congo, unlike several African countries, is not undergoing extremist attacks, although some observers have expressed concern about possible links with the rebel group of Allied Democratic Forces active in the north-east of the country.

The vast country of Central Africa is facing a historic election in a month, with President Joseph Kabila having announced his resignation. The United States and other members of the international community have irritated the Congolese government by raising concerns about how the elections will be conducted.
