The University of Washington was ranked # 28 on the Times Higher Education Global Ranking for 2019, released Wednesday.
The UW is also the fourth largest US public institution – behind UCLA, UC Berkeley and the University of Michigan – a position it has held for three years.
"As a public university with global reach, we seek to be measured by the impact we have on the lives of our students and communities around the world and in Washington," said Ana. Mari Cauce. "We are honored to have this impact recognized by this ranking, which reflects the teaching, learning and discovery taking place at the University of Washington."
Times Higher Education's global academic rankings identify research-intensive universities in all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international perspectives. The rankings use 13 performance indicators to provide complete and balanced comparisons that they believe are trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments.
Performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment, mainly based on a reputation survey); research (including the number of articles published in academic journals); citations (influence of research, including the number of times a university's published work is cited by researchers around the world); international perspectives (including the ability of the university to attract students and professors from around the world); and industry revenues (knowledge transfer in terms of the university's ability to assist the industry with innovations, inventions and advice).
