The Venezuelan government announced that it would hold a massive march Tuesday against US interference after reports said US officials had secretly met with Venezuelan military officers to discuss the president's ouster plans. Nicolas Maduro.
The United States "acknowledges having met at least three times with the leaders of the military state coup to carry out a coup d'etat," said Diosdado Cabello, president of the country's ruling Constituent Assembly.
At an event organized by Venezuela's ruling Socialist Unity Party (PSUV), Cabello also made a direct link to the August 4 drone explosions at Maduro's military parade.
"The presidential assassination that was arrested was led by the US Is there anyone who has any doubt?" Cabello asked.
US officials have decided not to act after the meetings, according to the New York Times. The newspaper, however, did not link this discussion to the explosion of drones.
On Twitter, Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza said it was "absolutely unacceptable and unjustifiable that US government officials attend meetings to encourage and promote violent extremist actions."
Diplomatic relations between Venezuela and the United States have been strained since the late Socialist President Hugo Chavez came to power in 1999. He was president until his death in 2013.
Chavez and Maduro, his successor, have accused Washington of dozens of alleged plots and assassination attempts.
The Trump administration calls Maduro a "dictator" and has criticized the Venezuelan crisis government. He imposed financial sanctions on Venezuela and his public oil company PDVSA.
Venezuela also accuses the United States of having triggered an emigration crisis to embarrass Caracas, which has the largest proven oil reserves in the world, but is in the midst of an economic crisis.
