Verizon announced that it was working on providing 5G home Internet service in a few US cities last November, and opened pre-orders last month to allow residents to sign up. The company has kept its promise to launch the service on October 1 and the facilities are starting today for residents of Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Sacramento. Customers will be able to access typical Wi-Fi speeds of around 300 Mbps and at peak speeds of up to 1 Gbps.
As part of its roll-out, Verizon is offering its free 5G Home service for three months, which will cost $ 50 per month for existing Verizon customers and $ 70 for other customers. The company also offers a free Chromecast or Apple TV 4K, as well as three months of YouTube TV. The service comes with the included installation and first access to 5G mobile devices when they become available in their area.
Operators have competed extensively to become the world's largest 5G commercial network. Verizon is the first to claim this title by launching a 5G home network, but their 5G mobile service plans remain to be seen until 2019. Meanwhile, AT & T, T-Mobile and Sprint are developing their networks for support mobile 5G and hardware. Manufacturers like Huawei and Xiaomi have also been busy developing 5G smartphones.
