Students in the class said that a dispute over the school's dress code had worsened the situation. The student was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
"I think it was one and the other of their flaws, like the teacher and the student," said student Enrique Deharo. "I was afraid for the child and partly for the teacher too."
The video shows a junior from the Maywood Academy who takes advantage of the teacher while using racial slurs. At one point, he even pitched his basketball at the man.
"I felt a little disturbed, because you know, it's a little racist," said student Ivan Valencia.
The teacher was quickly arrested.
While the Los Angeles Unified School District said it could not comment on staffing issues, the district said it was cooperating with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office.
Parents are unhappy with the fight, but they are divided.
One mother said that the teacher was defending herself and was completely right.
Another woman said that this teacher was known for her aggression.
"I think something needs to be done," said Miriam Guizar. "It's out of control – I do not know what the problem is with the teacher – I know kids are saying things they should not, but he should be accountable."
The school principal contacted parents and students to announce that crisis counselors would be available in high school on Monday.
