The Vikings said on Wednesday that running back Ameer Abdullah was dismissed from the Detroit Lions.
Abdullah, 25, has been the Lions' best running back in the past two seasons.
The transaction has been confirmed by NFL sources.
Nebraska's second-round pick (54th overall) in 2015, Abdullah sided behind rookie Kerryon Johnson and veterans Theo Riddick and LeGarrette Blount on Detroit's depth card and was sidelined on Tuesday. He played only three games, running once for a yard and two passes.
Abdullah, 5-9, and 200 pounds, led the Lions as a rookie with 597 yards but was sidelined for most of 2016 due to a foot operation. He had 552 rushing yards last season.
A native of Homewood, Alabama, Abdullah ran over 1,600 yards in his junior and senior seasons in Nebraska. Towards the end of his senior season, he won the Senior CLASS Senior Division Award, based on his athletic, community and classroom achievements.
His base salary this season is $ 875,000.
Detroit on Tuesday signed former half-timer Eagan Zach Zenner.
The Vikings have a week off after defeating Detroit 24-9 at the US bank's US stadium on Sunday, a match in which they unleashed a successful double between Dalvin Cook and Latavius Murray.
Murray leads the team with 417 yards on 92 runs (average of 4.5) with five touchdowns. Cook, absent most of the season due to a thigh injury, has 187 yards in 46 races, including 70 yards in a single Sunday.
