The Minnesota Vikings have expressed concern about the "well-being" of defensive end Everson Griffen, who did not participate in the third week and was quoted on Monday.
"We are aware of the situation regarding Everson Griffen and certainly concerned about what we have heard," Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said in a statement on Monday. "We are currently focusing on the well-being of Everson and are providing the proper support for him and his family."
Spielman's statement came after several reports that Griffen was involved in a Saturday incident at a Minneapolis hotel.
Griffen was ruled out Sunday's loss to the Buffalo Bills after failing to train last week due to a knee injury. Coach Mike Zimmer was asked to clarify why Griffen was not sidelined, to which he replied, "He has a personal problem and I will leave it there.
On Monday, Griffen was ranked DNP on the simulated injury-to-practice report with a "knee / non-football injury". (The Vikings have a short week since playing against the Rams in Los Angeles on Thursday, they did not practice on Monday.)
Griffen was arrested twice after his rookie season, the first incident having occurred on January 28, 2011, when he was arrested in Los Angeles on suspicion of public intoxication. He was arrested a few days later for allegedly assaulting an officer during a roadside check.
Griffen, 30, played his nine seasons with the Vikings, compiling 62 sacks. He has three Pro Bowl selections.
