Dan Bailey became the next Vikings kicker on Tuesday.
The Vikings signed the former Cowboys kicker official and, in a matching alignment move, dropped second-year receiver Stacy Coley.
The Vikings brought Bailey for a visit and a physics Monday. His contract is worth $ 2 million for a season, according to a league source. He had multi-year offers for twice the money offered by the Vikings, said the source, but disappointed them in Minnesota, saying it was the right place.
Bailey, who was released by the Cowboys on Sept. 1 as part of a career change, was the second most accurate kicker in NFL history during his seven seasons in Dallas.
He will replace Daniel Carlson, who the Vikings released Monday after the rookie missed three goals in 29-29 against the Packers on Sunday. The Vikings chose Carlson with the team's 167th pick in April, making him the best shooter in the team's history, but let him go after only two games, coach Mike Zimmer said.
Carlson defeated Kai Forbath in the preseason, becoming the third Vikings' kick in Zimmer's five seasons as head coach. Now, Bailey will be the fourth.
"It's life," Zimmer said Monday. "I do not know, it's hard to understand, you think you have a guy for a while, then he goes out and misses three in a big game, but things happen, I guess."
Coley was a seventh-round pick from Miami in 2017. Periodically injured by injuries during his tenure, he played six games. Also Tuesday, the Vikings, according to league sources, have planned to sign again defensive tackle Tom Johnson, released Saturday by Seattle. Johnson will sign a one-year contract valued at $ 1.5 million, sources at the Star Tribune said.
The depth of defensive line would seem to be the least of the Vikings' concerns, especially with Sheldon Richardson and Linval Joseph providing the exact type of inner pressure that Zimmer covets.
