Virginia Tech Hokies schedules the match against Marshall Thundering Herd in search of the bowl

Virginia Tech looking to qualify for the bowl with a 4-6 record, the Hokies have scheduled a conditional match against Marshall, the school announced.

If Virginia Tech beats Virginia against Friday, the Hokies will host the Thundering Herd on Dec. 1 in a match between two teams whose matches were canceled due to Hurricane Florence in September. If Virginia wins, the Hokies will be eliminated from the competition and the match against Marshall will be canceled.

The Hokies have played a game of petanque each season since the 1993 Independence Bowl.

Virginia Tech will survive and play against Marshall. Hokies have a 50.1% chance to beat the Cavaliers, according to the ESPN Football Power Index.

The September 15 match of Virginia Tech against East Carolina did not happen when the Pirates refused to travel because of the hurricane, while the Marshall match against South Carolina was also canceled because of the storm.

Marshall (7-3) is already eligible for the cup and ends his program of the American conference Saturday against the CRF.
