Virginia Tech vs Old Dominion final score: Monarchs upset Hokies 49-35

No. 13 Virginia Tech himself took an interesting trip this Saturday to Norfolk, Va., To face Old Dominion on his home turf. The Monarchs ended up winning a great 49-35, getting the win as the undefeated 28 points made us our biggest problem of the season!

In the fourth quarter, Old Dominion took a 42-35 lead with just under five minutes left on this magnificent run from Monarchs WR Jonathan Duhart.

The monarchs followed with an exclamation point on the game with a TD that won.

ODU did not waste time appearing.

The match was tight and the monarchs kept things in the fourth quarter, allowing VT to take only seven for the match. Old Dominion has passed the Hokies by more than 200 meters.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Hokie starting quarterback Josh Jackson left the match with what appeared to be a left foot injury. His replacement, Ryan Willis, replaced him.

It was not exactly a dominant monarchic team either – Virginia Tech was their first win of the 2018 season, after Ls to Liberty, FIU and Charlotte.

In 2017, the monarchs declined and went from 5 to 7, and the beginning of the year 2018 seemed to continue.

But getting a home win against Virginia Tech # 5 makes the slow start a little more bearable. Not to mention Old Dominion, this is the first ever victory over an opponent Power 5, ACC and ranked in the history of the program.

It's not like these two schools do not know each other.

In fact, these two teams clashed almost a year ago today in Blacksburg – this match went very differently, the Hokies won 38-0. VT's roadtrip to Norfolk was certainly different, as ODU is in its fifth season at the FBS level.

The home-home agreement was rather unique, but it was wise for Old Dominion to actively plan from the start:

Reaching a home game against the Hokies was a feat, when an agreement was made in 2012. The extension of the home series to bring the Hokies to Norfolk six times between 2018 and 2031 was a coup de maître.

Power 5 schools do not often accept such arrangements with their major brothers. Tech's willingness to make an exception reinforced ODU's credibility when it moved to FBS.

Old Dominion has been trying to become an upward program with its FBS entry, but not everything has been perfect. Just two years ago, Old Dominion won its first ever cup game with a Bahamas Bowl victory over East Michigan. The Monarchs have had one of their best seasons under head coach Bobby Wilder this season, finishing 10-3. This victory will certainly remain in the story.
