Visitors flock to East Yorkshire Lake to see a rare bird

Hundreds of bird watchers have arrived on the east coast of Yorkshire in hopes of spotting an extremely rare bird.

The white-rumped whip was spotted Sunday night at Hornsea Mere.

Native to Africa, it is the first recorded sighting of this bird in the UK, according to the Rare Bird Alert website.

Fans arriving at the resort were disappointed because the bird has not been seen since Sunday.

The woman who saw the bird for the first time said that it was "a really exciting discovery".

Lesley Ball saw the martinet at her house overlooking the lake.

"I contacted my fellow bird watchers," she said.

"They came and confirmed that it was a quick peaceful early, for a few minutes, then that was confirmed as a fast to rump white and that it was a first for Great Britain. "

An ornithologist said that there was a row of parked cars "a good half mile" along the road next to the lake on Monday morning.

"I talked to people from different parts of the country," he said.

"There's a guy here from Norfolk, there was a guy from Essex, another from Stoke-on-Trent, another from Nottingham, from everywhere."
