Vizio is producing a special edition red model of its 55-inch P-Series 4K TV in partnership with Product Red, an organization that campaigns to fight HIV and AIDS in Africa. A minimum of 10 percent of the price of every TV will be donated to the organization’s campaign against the disease.
We’ve seen plenty of Product Red devices over the years, but this is the first time we’ve seen a model of television take on the distinctive red finish. Apple has been one of the biggest supporters of the initiative, releasing a red iPhone 8 earlier this year and a red iPhone 7 the year before. TVs tend to be much more conservative with their color schemes than phones, making Vizio’s red P-Series a bold statement for anyone who chooses to buy it.
Thankfully, you won’t have to make many spec compromises if you want to support a good cause. The P-Series set supports a full array of HDR standards (including HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG), and it has a backlight with 56 local dimming zones, which should allow for a decent level of contrast between light and dark areas of an image. There’s no official word yet on pricing or availability, and the lack of real product shots in the announcement suggests they’re a little ways away. The non-red version of the TV is currently retailing for around $799.99, and, historically, the prices of Apple’s red iPhones tend to stick closely to the standard model.
