Vogue apologizes after Kendall Jenner's photoshoot criticized for "cultural appropriation"

American Vogue is excused after a photo shoot starring Kendall Jenner has been labeled "cultural appropriation" by the critics.

The magazine posted the images of the model on Instagram, where they sparked a wave of negative comments from people who found Jenner's afro-like hairstyle "shocking."

In a report, the publication Condé Nast explained how the photos taken to promote the Vogue/ CFDA Fashion Fund, were to evoke a nostalgic aesthetic reminiscent of the early twentieth century.

"The image is supposed to be an update of Edwardian / Gibson Girl's romantic hair that suits the vintage mood of the Brock collection, as well as the great hair of the '60s and early '0s. 70s, who were puffing at these times, "said the magazine E! New Tuesday.

"We apologize if the result was different than expected, and we certainly did not want to offend anyone."

We see Jenner donning the controversial hairstyle on two photos, one of which is also the model Imaan Hammam, whose hair was stiff.

Taken by fashion photographer Mikael Jansson, the two images were meant to celebrate the 15 years of the Vogue/ CFDA Fashion Fund, an annual award for emerging designers.

Jenner's clichés prompted people to ask why the magazine had projected it instead of a model whose hair was naturally capped in this way.

"For years, we have been penalized for our appearance and especially for our hair.It is a slap when non-blacks are trying to imitate our appearance," commented one person.

"We used to burn our hair because the company had taught us that we were not beautiful with our afros, now they copy our afros but can not use the real BLACK models with afros! " added another.

Others took the defense of the magazine, claiming that the hairstyle was not Afro at all, with only one person writing: "All the anger that reigns about this is nonsense." Another person said that Jenner's hair had been "curly and teased," but insisted that they did not look like an afro.

Jenner herself has not yet responded to critics, but the reality TV star is no stranger to the controversy.
