Volcanologist dissatisfied with Sunday Times report Katla

Volcanologist Evgenia Ilyinskaya is very unhappy with an article in the Sunday Times this weekend titled "Giant Iceland Katla about to explode."

Ilyinskaya writes in a message on Facebook that the Sunday Times reporter has misquoted it and that the headline is completely wrong. She writes:

Incredibly disappointing to see that the Sunday Times has taken the path of trash tabloids. The title is simply wrong and the article cheats on me and distorts my words.

After a 20-minute conversation with this reporter where I explicitly said that:

a) we are not able to predict if Katla is "about to burst" or "magma is developing"

And

b) the severity of the disturbance of the air traffic of Eyjafjallajökull was very unusual and it is unlikely that Katla bursts

– They quote me saying exactly the opposite!

Moreover, at no time did I speak to any of the journalists who published information about this study. I said the words "accumulation of magma". Our study shows no such thing. Yet these words are in every report – supposedly quoting me directly.

This not only misleads the people who read it, but it undermines me as a scientist and specialist in my field. I can not help but feel exasperated. "
