CHICAGO – A volunteer working with an anti-violence organization in the city was shot dead in a street in South Side this week, authorities said.

Delmonte Johnson, 19, had participated in the efforts of a group called Good Kids Mad City, which was born as part of a national movement to end gun violence after a deadly shootout at Parkland, Florida.

Group members expressed dismay that even a person who worked for peace on the streets of Chicago could be struck here. By Friday, 381 people had been killed in violence this year in Chicago and 2,074 people were shot and wounded.

Chicago police said Mr. Johnson was shot several times on Wednesday night while he was walking along South Euclid Avenue. He was shot in the chest and stomach and died in a nearby hospital. Her mother, Onique Walker, told the press that he had been an athlete and a volunteer to help the neighborhood.
