If you have not heard of it yet, Vontae Davis left the NFL on Sunday.
The way he did, however, raised quite a few smiles when the Buffalo Bills cornerback decided to retire at half-time in the Bills Week 2 defeat against the Los Angeles Chargers. He issued a statement on his Twitter account Sunday night and Wednesday, he said that he had no regrets as to how he had left the game.
"The departure was therapeutic, brother. I left everything the league wanted me to do, playing for my teammates while being injured, the gladiator mentality, all that jumped, "Davis told Domonique Foxworth. "And when it broke, I just wanted to leave everything behind me. That's why I do not care what people say. This experience was personal and not meant to be understood by anyone. It was me the cold turkey leaving an identity that I wore with me for so long.
Davis signed a one – year deal with $ 5 million with Buffalo in February. The Pro Bowler has twice spent the previous six seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. But at age 30, he suddenly decided to hang up, noting that he "was not expecting his teammates to understand his decision.
"This moment was shocking for me too," said Davis.
It was certainly an unorthodox way to retire, but Davis seems rather pleased with his decision.
