Voted David Beckham Stadium Plan in Miami

Miami voters on Tuesday approved a move that will help David Beckham and his property group build a stadium specifically dedicated to football for a future Major League Soccer team.

The approval now allows Beckham and his group to negotiate the lease of urban land near the Miami International Airport, which currently houses the Melreese Country Club – which they plan to turn into a stadium and a gigantic shopping complex, according to the Miami Herald. The decision will avoid a competitive bidding process for the location, allowing Beckham and his group to negotiate the terms of the lease before starting construction work.

According to the report, the plan includes a 25,000-seat football stadium, at least 750 hotel rooms and at least one million square feet of office space, shops and businesses. A 58-acre public park next to the complex is also under construction.

Beckham and his ownership group – which includes Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure, Japanese billionaire Masayoshi Son and brothers Jorge and Jose Mas from Miami, among others – are struggling to get land in Miami to build their stadium for years.

Miami and Nashville are about to launch MLS clubs in 2020, the latest cities to host MLS extension teams. Club Internacional de Futbol Miami, or Inter Miami, will play in a temporary stadium in 2020 before joining its stadium dedicated to football in 2021. Miami and Nashville will become the 25th and 26th teams of the league when they join their club in 2020.

While the deal with the city for the field still needs to be locked, Tuesday's vote is a major victory for Beckham and his group's quest to build the stadium in Miami.
