Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 3 – Warning Signs Review: Bleak But Great

The man is the real monster

Last week, we found that Maggie was able to handle the burden of leadership. while she may have had an instinctive reaction by jailing Earl and refusing Sanctuary food, she finally made the right choice by freeing Earl and sharing Hilltop stores. But his deep anger for the Saviors in general and for Negan in particular has not gone away, as the scary climax of "Warning Signs" shows.

This episode definitely answers the mystery of the missing saviors, as it was revealed that Cyndie and the other Oceansiders were the culprits. Their targets were not chosen at random. They removed the survivors of Simon's crew, those who executed the men of Oceanside. It's good that the revelation is not stretched (most TV shows nowadays might use more brevity in their stories), but it does make the Oceansiders make stupid mistakes, like killing Justin with a weapon distinctive (a shotgun rifle), then letting it spin so that everyone realizes that the disappearances are murders, not desertions.

When Arat, another Savior, disappears, Daryl and Maggie can use their combined knowledge of the Oceansiders to find them before the murder is committed. Cyndie explains in tears that it is Arat who killed her 11 year old brother and that she is the last member of Simon's crew, so that will be the end of the disappearances. Maggie is skeptical, but Cyndie reveals that Maggie's execution of Gregory is what prompted the Oceansiders to pursue their own justice. Maggie and Daryl turn away to let the Oceansiders finish what they started, and at dawn Maggie tells Daryl that she too is inspired. It's time for them to see Negan.

All this is exceptionally sinister, involving in particular two beloved tracks, but everything rests on a solid build of character. Negan was exhausted by his sadism. The decision of Maggie and Daryl here is understandable and all the more devastating. As Maggie notes to Daryl, she really wants to be able to believe in Rick's vision, because it's a world in which she wants to raise her child, but she can not finally give up the pain and rage caused by Glenn's murder. . The dark, dark matter is so much easier to take when driven by credible characters.

Assessment of community tension

Level of threat midnight. The Saviors were already on their nerves, but the discovery of Justin's body nearly provoked a riot. The only thing that prevents him is Rick riding on horseback (it is unfortunately not a white horse). We must therefore remember once again how fragile peace between communities is due to the imminent departure of Rick Grimes.

It's a bit strange that rescuers seem less interested in murder than in armed murder, but once you've been in a fascist personality cult for many years, you tend to lose sight of it. Nevertheless, their complaints are valid (anyone really wants to get them!), Just like Rick's reasoning for keeping them unarmed. There are some jolts among the saviors, but no absolute psychopath like the one who once tormented the Kingdom's delivery team, so while our loyalty is towards Rick, the other party scores a point.

A shred of humanity

Throughout this period of darkness, Rick also passionately explained to us why his path was the best path to follow. In discussions with Daryl and Carol, he explains how he sees the world now. He and the others have lost so much over the years that he has decided to dedicate himself to building life instead of taking it. As he says succinctly, "It's us or the dead. And every life counts now. What's interesting is the way Daryl and Carol each interpret their speech. Daryl joins Maggie because he still can not forgive the Saviors for his capture and torture. Carol, meanwhile, is more sensitive to Rick's words. When deserter rescuers decide to bring down Rick and Carol, she manages to subdue her attacker without killing him. When he wonders why she did not, Rick shouts, "Because every life counts now." She has her own conflicting feelings about it, but she's part of the Rick team.

Anne is the real monster

Gabriel takes care of Anne, thinking to hide something about the missing Saviors, but accidentally falls on her communication with the mysterious characters of the helicopter. She tells Gabriel that she had a habit of trading people for supplies, which is why all those crazies of art schools could survive so long in this dump. Anne asks Gabriel to accompany him since he is the only one to have defended it when the charges against the Saviors began to fly. Gabriel refuses, finally showing a backbone, but Anne knocks him off, saying: "All the while, I thought you were a B." It looks like there is a new "Big Bad" on the horizon, which does not create confidence for the future. It is far too early to come back to the group "Here is another group of human beings, but they are purely perverse", but we will try to reserve our judgment for the moment.
