DRAPER, Utah – Wanda Barzee, convicted for her role in the abduction of Elizabeth Smart, was deprived of her parole.
The Utah Pardons and Liberty Council announced Monday that Barzee would have another parole hearing. In 1965, Barzee, 72, was convicted of conspiracy to commit kidnapping as part of the Elizabeth Smart abduction in 2002. Barzee's husband, Brian David Mitchell, was convicted of 39, breaking into the Smart family's home and taking Elizabeth, then 14, into captivity for nine months. The Parole Board stated in her decision that she would consider a parole hearing earlier if Barzee was willing to cooperate with an assessment of the condition. Mental Health. Her sentence should expire in 2024, which means she would be released at that time.
Barzee, 72, refused to attend her parole hearing last month, instead informing correctional officers that she did not wish to be transported. Barzee is serving a sentence of one to fifteen years in Utah State Prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit an abduction.
