The roles of Black Canary and Huntress are up for grabs.
Warner Bros. seeks to fill his aviary for Birds of prey.
DC's feature film, directed by Margot Robbie as anti-heroine Harley Quinn, restricts the actress who will play several heroines, Black Canary and Huntress.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who played in Beautiful and appeared in Ava DuVernay A ride in time, and Jurnee Smolett-Bell, who participated in the critically acclaimed WGN series Underground and recently booked an advance in HBO Lovecraft Country, are in the mix for Black Canary. Hidden figures Star Janelle Monae would also have been in the running, but it is unclear if she has tested for this role.
Canary, who is an expert fighter known for his "canary cry," has always been white in comics, but Warners is looking for diverse talents to Birds of prey.
For the role of Huntress, Margaret Qualley (Leftovers), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane, Fargo) and Cristin Milioti (Black mirror, How did I meet your mother) have tested or read, according to sources.
Justina Machado, who plays in Netflix One day at a time and who appeared on Jane the Virgin and The Purge: Anarchy, tested for the role of Renee Montoya. Roberta Colindrez, who played in the Amazon series I like Dick and Starz Vida, also tested for the character, a lesbian police detective from Gotham City.
Canary and Huntress have appeared in many forms on the small screen, including on Arrow.
Another role to play is that of Cassandra Cain. In comics, Cain is a woman who functions as a mute and socially unsuited assassin and who was, at one point, Batgirl. The studio is looking to remake the character at the age of 12 and is looking for an Asian actress for the role.
There are other potential actors for the roles, but it is said that Warners is evolving rapidly, with decisions expected within two weeks. Birds of prey aims to shoot early in 2019, with Cathy Yan attached to directing.
