Warning that artificial sweeteners contained in Diet Coke "are toxic to intestinal bacteria"

"Diet" and "Zero" drinks are being marketed as a healthy alternative, but soft drinks loaded with sweeteners could actually pose serious health risks, the researchers warned.

In experiments, researchers tested six common (legal) sweeteners in the UK and discovered that they could be toxic to bacteria in our intestines.

The researchers warn that this could lead to "a wide range of health problems".

Researchers at Ben Gurion University have tested six commonly used substances, including aspartame, sucralose and saccharin on bacteria designed to shine.

"We have modified the bioluminescent E. coli bacteria, which light up when they detect toxic substances and act as a representative detection model of the complex microbial system," says Professor Ariel Kushmaro.

"This is further evidence that the consumption of artificial sweeteners negatively affects the microbial activity of the gut which can cause a wide range of health problems."

The researchers discovered that chemicals have a stressful and toxic effect.

Researchers believe that simply taking one or two artificially sweetened beverages per day could affect intestinal bacteria, complicating the treatment of sugar and other carbohydrates.

Lead author Kushmaro said, "We do not claim that it is toxic to humans, we say it could be toxic to gut bacteria, which will influence us.

Kushmaro said: "My recommendation is not to use artificial sweeteners."
