OAKLAND – Steve Kerr has expressed the wish that the Warriors recruit someone who can immediately contribute to a select team to win his third consecutive title in the NBA. This is a high bar, perhaps even unfair, that a recruit must erase.
In the Summer League, it was obvious that the player that the Warriors had recruited at the end of the first round in June – Jacob Evans III – was going to ask for some patience.
Kerr now concedes it, as does Willie Green, head coach of the Warriors' Summer League and assistant who spends the most time developing Evans.
"It's making tremendous progress," Green said on the Warriors Insider podcast. "What I've seen in the Summer League, is a kid who really understands the game. He can see what we call" pictures. " He can read the defense works. He can read the infringing images.
"It's just about preparing your body to handle an NBA season. Get him into the weight room, getting him used to being on time. It's a lot to be a professional. So, he learns all these things. "
Evans has played in six of the ten games to date, totaling 37 minutes. He is 2 of 7 off the ground and has not yet shot a 3-point shot. He has seven assists, however.
The concern is with his shot. It looked weird in the Summer League, where he shot badly, and it will take some time to smooth it out.
Green believes he knows why.
"He's hurt hand in college," Green said. "He hurt the ligaments on his finger. He did not know what was wrong with his hand at the time, but he kept trying to play it. Because of that, he had to catch the ball strangely. We are just trying to get him to catch the ball and to have a smooth transition from attack to looseness. That's what he fought for when he came here.
"It will take time for this to happen, but we want to do it, while preparing his body for the physicality of the NBA."
Warriors have to wait and they can afford to do it. Reserve guards Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson left for Andre Iguodala. While Shaun Livingston has missed the last four games, Alfonzo McKinnie has taken a few minutes, although it 's like a small striker.
