Astronauts currently living in the International Space Station have downloaded the first video shot in 8K resolution in space.
The images were filmed by a Helium 8K RED digital camera that was delivered to the ISS in April, along with other supplies aboard the SpaceX SpaceX 14 Replenishment Mission.
8K specifically refers to the resolution of 8192 x 4320 pixels of a video. For comparison, the average HDTV can display an image of 1920 x 1080 or 1080P HD. However, in recent years, HD 2K and 4K resolutions are gaining popularity.
The 3-minute video showed some of the experiments the astronauts conducted aboard the station with outstanding detail. However, a screen compatible with a resolution of 8K will be necessary to fully appreciate the footage. Even so, when viewed on a standard HD display, the video will always appear sharper and smoother than those shot at lower resolutions.
It should be noted that increasing the number of pixels increases the file size. The short 3-minute clip consumes 3,127 megabytes or about 3 gigabytes of storage space using the popular MP4 video format. It's about a gigabyte per minute. You can download the images via this link.
