Participants of the first edition of the Sea, at Asbury Park. Hear. Now. On the evening of Sunday September 30, Social Distortion presented a festival to a surprise guest: none other than local legend Bruce Springsteen.
Social singer D Mike Ness set the mood by presenting that a guest would join the group to "sing a song or two".
"Do you know who I'm talking about?" He asked the crowd, already singing a chorus of "Broooooooce".
Dressed in a short-sleeved and plaid shirt, Springsteen tied a guitar and joined the band for a knockout of three songs from "Bad Luck", joining a verse and adding a good lead to the guitar.
Springsteen stayed on stage for two more songs – "Misery Loves Company" and the punk rock pianist Johnny Cash of Social Distortion, "Ring of Fire".
Springsteen and Ness have already shared the stage. Ness joined The Boss at the Los Angeles Sports Arena at a show in April 2009 for a performance of "Bad Luck" and "The Rising".
Springsteen had already joined Ness with his solo band, The Mike Ness Band, at Asbury Park before the 2009 concert, according to the Springsteen and Us blog. "But for me to make two songs with the E Street Band in front of its audience, it's is a completely different thing, "said Ness at the time. Ness added that it was Springsteen's choice to make "Bad Luck". "He likes to play solo on this riff."
Thirty bands performed at the two-day festival this weekend, including top acts like Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Incubus and Blondie. Other artists include Kaleo, Jesse Malin, Brandi Carlile, G. Love and Special Sauce, Milky Chance, The English Beat, Danny Clinch's group, co-founder of the festival, Tangiers Blues Band. Clinch is a renowned rock photographer and director, having shot Springsteen for the cover of Variety and directed the documentary Pearl Jam, "Let's Play Two", at Wrigley Field.
The festival, which also featured a pop-up gallery, was produced by Between The Sets and C3 Presents by Danny Clinch, the team behind Lollapalooza, the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Shaky Festivals and more.
The seaside gathering consisted of three stages. Two were on the beach and the other at Bradley Park, opposite the Paramount Theater.
