John Carpenter's Halloween is an extremely influential film, and the classic horror was itself heavily influenced by others, including Black christmas, Innocents, Touch of evil, and psycho. David Gordon GreenThe new suite, also titled Halloween, will not be as effective. And his own influences are not so obvious. Halloween 2018 just seems to be inspired by Halloween 1978 and the suites that no longer have cannon and have been realized over the last 40 years. Still, I made a nice little set of recommendations about what you should see after checking the much-anticipated follow-up.

Titicut Follies (1967) and Flight over a cuckoo's nest (1975)
I had planned to recommend only movies released after the original Halloween, but these two films are the best options for making the connection with the scene of psychiatric institutions in the new film. green mentioned the testimony of Milos Forman Flight over a cuckoo's nest one of the favorites of all, and although the institution where Michael Myers resides is nothing like the psychiatric hospital in this merry adaptation of Ken Kesey's novel, it seems that Green was the closest to paying tribute to winner of the Best Film Award.
As for Titicut FolliesThe controversial and hard-hitting documentary by Frederick Wiseman presents an equally uncomfortable installation. As he told The Dissolve in 2014, he discovered the film later in life and it became an important work at the time: "At age 30, I began to enter in the documentaries of Frederick Wiseman … I watched Titicut Follies again and again."
Halloween III: Season of the witch (1982)
Even if the new Halloween has restarted all other Michael Myers suites, there is a reason you see all the other previous installments (with the exception of Rob Zombie's remake and follow-up, I think) if you like Green's tracking : in order to get all the tributes, including the cameo of three Silver Shamrock masks from Season of the witch. But Halloween III (which features the voice of Jamie Lee Curtis in an uncredited cameo) is also the only one of the suites that can still be considered a canon, even if it has never been linked to others.
With Green's Halloween to be the new Halloween II, Season of the witch always happens to be Halloween IIIso to watch then. Maybe if Blumhouse is eager to do more Halloweens after the success of the last, they can respect the intentions of Season of the witch as the beginning of a series of anthologies and actually produce unrelated HalloweenBrand features.
Psycho II (1983)
Ignoring the other Halloween Following, the new movie is a direct sequel to the original that arrives 40 years later. And it's the only one Halloween in addition to the original to have a positive score for rotten tomatoes. Similarly, Psycho II, released 23 years after Alfred Hitchcock's original, is the only one of his franchise to be the first to have a positive score for Rotten Tomatoes. Of course, much of his favor came in the decades following its launch, at which time his critics were mixed.
Unlike the new HalloweenThe return of Jamie Lee Curtis, Psycho II his mother, Janet Leigh, but Vera Miles resumes her sister role. There is also a parallel plot with Halloween. This late sequel follows the return of his serial killer in the world – though by official discharge rather than by an escape – and by a mother (Miles) and her daughter (Meg Tilly) who do not really like this idea. Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) intends to qualify for his second chance, but can people like him really be healed?
Murder: no apparent motive (1984)
Although not officially recognized, serial killer Ed Kemper would have had an influence on Michael Myers. His story is certainly similar, having murdered family members in his youth, and then killed several female students after leaving a psychiatric hospital. And be an imposing figure. Unlike Myers, Kemper talked about his actions and why he committed the killings and then committed heinous acts on the bodies of his victims.
You can see an interview with him in the 1981 documentary, more sensational and more complete The murder of Americaand you can find even more of his confessions and his story in this documentary about real crimes about him, as well as that of Ted Bundy and what the FBI learned from these experiences. This premise is of course dramatized in the Netflix series produced by David Fincher Hunter of spirit, in which Cameron Britton describes the true Kemper.
Repo Man (1984)
Similar to head nods at The thing of another world and Forbidden planet in the original version HalloweenGreen's film also features television sets broadcasting some cult classics. One is the science fiction television series of the early 80's Voyagers!, which I can only hope to mean – as Carpenter did with The thing – Green means to redo the show of time travel. The other is this sci-fi film, illustrated by the opening scene where a highway cop is sprayed by a mysterious light emanating from the trunk of a car.
Let's hope that Green does not hint at his desire to do it again, because it would be a useless and probably fruitless idea – unless he can do it on his own. Repo Man what Carpenter did with The thing and create something totally his own and probably even better. Some might argue that he's done well enough to respect Halloween with his sequel that he deserves a chance with any other favorite mythology of the fans.
