The Tesla Model 3 had its share of difficulties, from CEO Elon Musk to Well documented production hell to more recent logistics "Nightmares" which slowed deliveries to customers.
There is one area where the Tesla shines: crash safety tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. And the Tesla 3 model is no exception. Check out the videos below to watch the crash tests.
The rear-wheel drive version of the Tesla Model 3 received a five-star safety rating from NHTSA, the highest achievable rating from the agency. These tests cover frontal, side and rollover accidents. Model 3 received five stars in each category, as well as subcategories such as side rails and collisions.
The crash of Tesla is supported by the absence of internal combustion engine. For example, without an engine in the hood, there is more room for a front deformation zone. Tesla vehicles also tend to resist overturning because the battery is located at the bottom of the vehicle, giving it a low center of gravity. The risk of a rollover in a Tesla 3 model is 6.6%, according to NHTSA.
Tesla Model 3 is not the only vehicle to get the best rating. There are other 2018 model year vehicles that have got a five star rating from NHTSA, including the four-door hybrid Subaru Legacy and Toyota Camry. It should also be noted, as Musk did on Thursday, that the five-star ratings only mean that the vehicle reaches a certain threshold. Probability of injury statistics, which are expected soon, indicate by how much.
The Insurance Institute for Road Safety also performs crash tests on vehicles to determine safety ratings. The IIHS, which represents automobile insurers, has not released notes on the model 3.
