Supreme Court candidate Brett Kavanaugh says he knew nothing about the allegations of sexual misconduct against a judge who was a friend and mentor.

Kavanaugh said on Wednesday that when allegations against former Federal Court Judge Alex Kozinski became public, they were a "punch" for him and for federal justice. At the question of knowing he was aware of the allegations before they were made public, Kavanaugh replied, "nothing". He said that he was "shocked and disappointed".

Asked if he was on a list of emails that Kozinski used to send offending material, Kavanaugh replied, "I do not remember anything like that.

Kozinski retired in December after several former clerks and female colleagues accused her of sexual misconduct.

Kavanaugh is busy with Kozinski, and Kozinski introduced him at his confirmation hearing in 2006 to become a judge.

Kavanaugh also said in response to specific questions from Democratic Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii that women "need to know who they can call, when they can call".

He also reiterated that he was unaware of the allegations of sexual harassment that led Alex Kozinski to retire last year as a judge of the court of appeal. He said victims of sexual harassment needed better information on how to manifest themselves.

Kavanaugh also said he was unaware of allegations of domestic violence against Rob Porter, who was secretary of staff for President Donald Trump. The new book by journalist Bob Woodward on Trump says that Kavanaugh recommended Porter for work. Kavanaugh was secretary of staff at the George W. Bush White House
