Last night at Foo Fighters’ second annual Cal Jam music festival at San Bernardino’s Glen Helen Region Park, the members of Nirvana reunited once again for a surprise set. This time, Deer Tick’s John McCauley and Joan Jett stood in for the late Kurt Cobain, performing three songs each. They did “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “In Bloom,” “All Apologies,“ “Breed,” “Scentless Apprentice,” and “Serve the Servants.” The Distillers’ Brody Dalle joined them on bass for “All Apologies.” Watch it happen in the playlist below.
The members of Nirvana have gotten back together on a few occasions in the recent past. When they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Jett was among the singers they had perform with them. Lorde, St. Vincent, and Kim Gordon also sang with the band. McCauley also performed with the band during a secret show in New York. In 2012 they played a benefit concert, wrote a new song, and performed on “SNL” with Paul McCartney as frontman.
Other bands on the lineup include Iggy Pop with his Post Pop Depression band, (Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Dean Fertita, and Troy Van Leeuwen, plus Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders), Tenacious D, Garbage, METZ, and others.
