Accompanied by his father and team leader, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the lightweight champion sat down to meet Putin at the forum "Russia – Country of Sport" in the city of Ulyanovsk. According to a RT Sports translation, Putin called Nurmagomedov's victory over McGregor "worthy and convincing". Of course, the elephant in the room also had to be addressed. Referring to Abdulmanap's recent comments about a harsher sentence for his son than the UFC or the Nevada Sports Commission, the Russian leader told Nurmagomedov that he would ask for clemency in his name.

"I will ask your father not to punish you too strictly because you have done the main task in a dignified and convincing way," Putin told RT Sports.

Shares of Nurmagomedov on Saturday have turned into a nasty snapshot here in the United States. But in his home country, Russia, he quickly became one of the most respected athletes by Russia. There is no better proof of this than when President Putin does his best to personally offer his congratulations and support.
