A teenager from Seattle has sung her way into brain surgery to preserve her talent.

The 19-year-old Kira Iaconetti's musical journey was about to start four years ago when she began having "problems", a form of epilepsy that came to her. the spirit whenever she sang or listened to music.

"It was as if a light switch was off in my brain. Suddenly, I became deaf, I could not process the words in tune with the music and I could not sing, "she said. Seattle Children's Hospital.

In the beginning, Kira eliminated the problems by 2 minutes, but once the frequency of her epilepsy increased, she had to see a neurologist.
As People reports, the cause of Kira's seizures remained unknown until an MRI at Seattle children revealed a calcified tumor that stood against her auditory cortex in the right temporal lobe of her brain – the real cause behind the seizure convulsive.

"Her tumor was discovered because of a very unusual type of epilepsy she called" musicogenic epilepsy, "said Dr. Jason Hauptman, a neurosurgeon at the Seattle Children's Neuroscience Center.

He added that Kira's seizures had been triggered by singing or listening to music, which was unfortunate, as this 19-year-old was an aspiring musician.

It was at this point that Dr. Hauptman's experience was put to use and that he developed a plan to perform an awake craniotomy – a surgical procedure that required him and his team to remove his tumor while she was under anesthesia, then waking her up for her to sing. In doing so, Hauptman located the areas of the brain that were activated while she was hitting the notes and away from them, thus preserving her ability to play and listen to music.

"Our goal was not only to take care of the tumor, but also to improve his life. We wanted to preserve things that interested him, such as his passion for pursuing a career in musical theater, "said Hauptman.

As for Kira, she covered Weezer's film "Island in the Sun" in 2001 on the bed of operations and is already healing. In fact, we saw her playing guitar and singing just 48 hours after her operation.

"Before my surgery, my biggest fear was that seizures do not hinder performance," she said. "Now, I want to come back on stage, play as soon as I can."

A video of the concert hall of the operation was uploaded by the hospital. She showed members of the surgical team who accompanied Kira in her performance.
