HOUSTON – Drivers were virtually immobilized late Thursday morning after a truck lost a giant reel.
Helen C., a KHOU 11 spectator, was traveling on the East Freeway when she and other passengers saw the reel slowly taxiing down the main lanes towards traffic in the opposite direction.
"Oh my God, I've never seen anything like it," Helen shouted. "It's crazy."
Houston TranStar reports that it happened on the west side of the highway, just inside the 610 loop. The coil stopped near Wayside Drive.
Marie Cervantes said that she was driving next to the big truck when the reel flew away.
"And that round thing fell, and I saw a big piece of metal flying," she says. "I'm happy that nothing has happened to me."
When Valdez returned home, she found two big bumps in her car. She returned to the scene where police checked her Dashcam and confirmed her story.
Mr. Ramirez saw the reel roll towards his vehicle.
"It was scary," he says.
The reel was finally moved and the traffic returned to normal.
