Robbie Lawler was looking to defend his UFC middleweight title for the third time and extended his winning streak to six consecutive bouts by meeting Tyron Woodley in the UFC main event 201 in July 2016. Woodley, who had not fought for nearly 18 months, was on a winning streak of two fights entering the title game.
On paper, both fighters played well. Their age was the same (34), their weight was identical (170) and their range was equal (74 inches). The only difference on the story of the band was that Lawler had a two-inch advantage over his opponent.
Philips Arena fans in Atlanta that night were behind the champion, who was a favorite of -155 to keep his belt, while the songs of "Robbie" filled the air early in the fight.
Woodley, best known for his wrestling skills, had scored four KOs in his seven fights leading to his title shot. Lawler, who built his career with his shot, had 20 knockouts in career.
The challenger added another knockout victory to his record when he grabbed Lawler with a right hand at 2:12 of the first round. The extra strikes that Woodley had made once Lawler was on the bridge were useless.
Since he's won the title, Woodley has been beaten three times. He retained his belt with a majority draw in his first defense attempt. Stephen Thompson, he and his opponent in this fight, took it back a few months after this fight. Woodley scored a majority decision in this contest. In his last defeat, Woodley held his strap with a unanimous decision against Demian Maia. Injuries prevented Woodley from defending his title since the July 2017 victory.
Woodley returns to action in the main event of UFC 228 where he faces a rising star at Darren Till. Till has an unbeaten record of 17-0-1. In May, he defeated Thompson by unanimous decision. He also ran out of three pounds for this fight.
UFC 228 will take place on September 8th from the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas.
