We are still dealing with the shocking news of yesterday, that Henry Cavill could leave the role of Superman and the DCEU behind. In the initial report, part of what precipitated this break in the way was a potential appearance of Henry Cavill's Man of Steel in the years to come. Shazam! Discussions apparently failed about scheduling conflicts and problems with a little cameo in Shazam! Henry Cavill was no longer in DC movies. Now, we can get an idea of what this has planned Shazam! cameo involved. Umberto Gonzalez from The Wrap shared details on the planned cameo, saying:
If that's true, the cameo Umberto Gonzalez describes on Instagram sounds like the kind of cameo you expect from Superman. At the end of Shazam!, after Billy Batson probably won and he did not, he is approached by Superman. He apparently attracted the attention of the Earth's greatest hero, leading Supes to introduce himself. The meeting would not be content to see this new player on the board, but also to establish a relationship if the Justice League needed a little extra help. This is no different than Tony Stark who watches Peter Parker.
What is fascinating about this report is that Clark Kent would have met Billy Batson in his non-superhero form. So, somehow, Superman will have seen or discovered that Shazam's super-powerful superhero, in fact, is just a child. Perhaps he is witnessing a transformation because discovering Shazam is not as simple as seeing Batman's hoods to see a recognizable billionaire underneath. This would mean that Shazam's secret identity might not be all that secret – at least not for Superman, and perhaps for the rest of the Justice League.
If we believe this report, it sounds like a charming and fun cameo that is only a treat for Billy Batson and the audience, reminding everyone that this story was part of the story. A much larger world. This would have been particularly significant since Billy Batson is a child and Superman is the archetype of a hero to aspire to in this world. We even see him referenced in a newspaper in the teaser, and Freddy Freeman seems to be a big fan.
Too bad this cameo probably does not happen. The unconfirmed exit of Henry Cavill would put the DCEU in a precarious position, except for a brief appearance Shazam! However, the situation seems to be fluid, with Henry Cavill posting an encrypted message on social media. But Cavill can stay on Kal-El until the official word says otherwise.
