The Winnipeg police released a photo later that day of a (redacted) traffic ticket that one of its agents was writing for "cannabis use in a motor vehicle".
"So … it happened early this morning," wrote the police department. "Just like alcohol, cannabis use is legal – and like alcohol, consuming it in your vehicle is ** not **."
Winnipeg Police Service, Traffic Division, Insp. Gord Spado told CBC News that the ticket was issued by an agent around 1 am one hour after the purchase of marijuana became legal. He told CBC / Radio-Canada that the weed involved in this stoppage was probably illegally purchased. (CNN contacted the ministry for more details.)
While many Canadians are now thrilled to abide by the law, the Winnipeg police reminded the public in a subsequent tweet that there were still laws and regulations that accompanied the new provisions.
"In the end, you can not use cannabis in your vehicle" he tweeted.
