A 62-year-old Allis woman, who was unable to walk or talk, faces months of rehabilitation after becoming the first documented case of West Nile virus in a man in Milwaukee County this year.

Susan was a very active woman before contracting the West Nile virus, but she also suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and an immune disease that made her more likely to get sick.
Susan's children said that after contracting the virus, she showed signs of severe exhaustion, confusion and a temperature of 103 degrees. The doctors diagnosed him with West Nile two weeks after admitting him to the USI.
"It's hard to see an extremely independent mother and a good tow truck lying in a hospital bed," Lisa said. "There is no cure, there is no immunization for that, just work with therapy."
Pappalardo's family wants Susan's case to remind everyone that everyone should be cautious on the outside.
"It's crazy, it's a part of everyday life," said Anthony Pappalardo, Susan's son. "People go outside and say," these mosquitoes, but you never know what you'll get ".
Her kids say it will be months before Susan can go home. They do not know where she contracted the virus.
