EVANSTON, IL – Mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile virus in three other cities this week. Lots of mosquitoes collected in the traps of Evanston, Glencoe and Northfield districts were tested positive for the virus on Tuesday, the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District announced. A total of nine mosquito lots in eight communities in northern Cook County were tested positive this year, according to the district.
The NSMAD said it planned to conduct targeted mosquito spraying operations between 8 pm. Wednesday and 2 pm Thursday in parts of Evanston, Glenview, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Niles and Skokie, weather permitting. (See map of affected areas below.)
The first mosquitoes tested positive this year were found last month in Glenview and Morton Grove, and the first human case of the virus was confirmed last week as a Chicago woman in her sixties.
The risk of human infection with West Nile virus is low, but it increases, according to health officials. Residents were asked to check their property for any items they may have overlooked and which may contain stagnant water.
Infected individuals may experience symptoms such as fever, nausea, headache, and muscle aches for weeks, although most people with West Nile have no symptoms and human cases are underweight. declared. In 2017, eight people died among 90 confirmed human cases in Illinois.
Statewide in 2018 so far, 46 mosquito lots have been tested positive for West Nile, and 14 counties have reported positive tests.
Surveillance of the virus includes laboratory tests on mosquitoes, dead birds and humans with symptoms similar to those of West Nile virus. People who notice sick or perching birds, which spread the virus to mosquitoes, should contact their local health department to determine if the bird will be taken care of for testing.
